In order to produce good Koi offspring it is important to find good quality parents in order to produce the same quality of Koi breed.

One primary consideration when considering breeding Koi is to find an ideal parent. The choice will also involve looking for the kind of color patterns you want to breed. It is suggested to maintain a quality bloodline of the fish in order to produce better Koi fry.

When you look for a parent Koi you need to consider the age of the fish since it can affect the quality of the egg shells. Thin shells are commonly produced by young females which significantly affect the survival of the egg.

On the other hand too old females have eggs that are too hard which makes the sperm penetration of the male Koi difficult. The ideal age for breeding Koi is between 4 to 5 years but breeding can also be successful with 15 years old Koi.

The Koi couple must be kept in separate places for at least 1 month. During this time they should be given proper feeding for the spawning condition. Breeding is carried out with pairs of fish. However, they also find success in breeding a single female Koi with 2 males. But it is discouraged to use more than 2 males as the female Koi might get hurt.

The ideal time for a successful Koi breeding is usually during full moon as this aids in the spawning process of the fish. You also need to provide an ideal environment for the spawning process.

You should decorate the aquarium or tank where you want the fish to mate. The use of a synthetic material for Koi breeding is highly encouraged but many expert breeders still prefer using the natural ones believing it produce good results.

Water hyacinths are good example of a natural material for breeding as it provides suitable spawning spots. However water hyacinths can carry parasites which require the need for water treatment such as Dipterex to eliminate the parasite prior to the fish breeding set-up.

When breeding your fish outdoor and using water hyacinths it is recommended to place a net on top of the fish tank since the water hyacinths can attract dragon flies. Although the insect is harmless to the fish it can leave its larvae to the water that can prey on the Koi eggs.

The net will also provide protection to the fry since they have the tendency to jump out of the water. This will also prevent them from being prowled on by predators.

The pH level of the water can affect the quality of the fry hence you should use neutral water. Acidic water can give a good red color to the fry but with a weak black color. Alkaline water will have the opposite effect. Keeping these tips in Koi breeding will help you produce quality Koi fish.

Koi diseases can be of different varieties that can be detrimental to the health of your fish.

Keeping a close watch on the common ailments that can affect your Koi is necessary in order to identify the typical indications that may suggest that your fish may be suffering from a disease.

Owners of this species should be aware of a wound that they may find on their Koi fish that does not seem to heal. Although at the beginning, the fish may seem unperturbed by the wound and show no signs of discomfort. However an apparent open wound that does not improve or may be spreading could be a sign of a cancer.

The cancer can prevent the wound from healing and it may be aggravated by some parasites that keep the infection going. Furthermore, high nitrates level can also contribute to the worsening of the condition. Failure to provide proper care to the Koi can lead to death. Taking the sick Koi fish immediately to a veterinarian is the wisest thing to do.

Home treatment for the condition involves debridement or removal of dead skin tissue that could otherwise help further infections to occur. Using a soft toothbrush or coarse gauze will do the job. Scrubbing off should be done without pressure.

Cancer in Koi is indicated by a tight ring around the wound that is white in color and shows pink color at its center. Genetics, high nitrates levels, pollution and photo-dermatitis are known predisposing factors of this Koi disease. Treatment involves excision of the cancerous tissues.

It is an upsetting condition to find your Koi fish having difficulty in closing their mouth. This Koi disease may be due to an ulcer or abscess that developed along the mouth area caused by bacterial infection. The infection goes through the suspensor ligaments of the mouth and its gill cover damaging Koi’s ability to close and open its mouth.

An ulcer along the mouth area can support these findings and antibiotic treatment can help control the spread of infection in acute conditions. However the damage can be permanent in some chronic cases.

Popeye or exophthalmia is another Koi disease that involves a protruding eye from its socket. It is thought to be caused by mycobacterial infection or Tuberculosis that promotes the development of abscess or eye granuloma. Viral infection, trauma and choroid infection can also be contributing factors.

This Koi disease may be hard to treat owing to the anatomical position of the Koi’s eyes where it has poor vascular supply and only few drugs can find access to reach the Koi’s eyes during treatment.

The possibility of transmitting Koi’s tuberculosis to human is also high so always avoid contact of the affected eye. Water quality is important. Always provide the Koi fish with the proper diet along with ideal temperature in its surroundings to reduce further stress.

With any Koi diseases that you may encounter early detection of symptoms and proper treatment of the fish are necessary for better prognosis of any Koi disease that may afflict your fish.

Koi supplies are numerous and it is important to identify those that your fish need the most. Knowing when to use and how to operate it are vital when taking care of your supplies and to make them work for their maximum benefit.

One of the most colorful and attractive pond fish is Kois. But taking care of them requires knowledge on proper care and knowing the essential supplies you will need for giving them a comfortable place to live is very important to successfully raise the Koi fish.

One essential Koi supply that will give the fish a more tranquil environment is a fountain. The fountain can keep the water stirring making fish to remain sufficiently apart. The noise of the fountain that is pleasing to Koi drowns out the unwanted noise that the fish find disturbing.

Promoting good health for your fish is vital, hence using a filter is a necessity to maintain the cleanliness of the water. Filters promote quality water as it removes pollutants and thus, prevents common health issues with your Koi fish. Filter supplies always come with a pump which keeps the water moving for a more efficient action of the filter.

Some install waterfalls or fountains on their pond to keep the movement of the water going that assist in the filtering process. It is not advisable however that these completely replace pumps, since their actions are not strong enough to support the filtration process needed to clean up the water.

There are some Koi supplies that are not used on a daily basis but you need to keep them handy as you will need them again. A de-chlorinator is used only when trying to replenish the water level of the pond with tap water. It helps eliminate harmful chemicals and keep the newly replaced water clean.

You should keep track of the pH and nitrate levels of the water by using a Koi supply that can test these chemicals on a weekly basis. Test kits are available in most pet supply stores. You should need either a baking soda or salt which you can sprinkle into the pond to help regulate the levels of nitrates and pH after testing the water with low levels of both chemicals.

Koi fish are also prone to becoming prey to other predators such as kingfishers, raccoons, herons, cats and foxes because of their colorful and brilliant colors. One way to avoid this is to create a pond designed to keep predators from wading into the water such as creating deeper pond and placing high overhangs on the pond’s sides to keep predators from reaching the water.

A net is a Koi supply used to conveniently keep the water clean from falling debris such as leaves from outdoor ponds. Koi fish need food to live and it is one of the most important Koi supply to keep on hand. Keep different variations of food sources to give your fish a treat. Most Kois like to feed from your hand so treat yourself with the pleasure of doing so.

Koi need special care and giving them the best comfort with proper Koi supplies is worth the effort.

Black Koi fish is different from other koi fishes mainly because of their large color variations. Other than that it is typically the same as other colored Kois. Koi fishes come in a variety of colors making them highly attractive.

They are actually considered to be uniquely bred fishes and are known for their characteristic colors and color patterns. Generally black koi live for over thirty years but it is not a typical life span for this species.

The male and female koi fish are easily distinguishable from each other through their anal configurations. That of males have more concave anus and their head have distinct breeding spots. These fish can spawn as much as 1,000 eggs. Baby koi fish are called fry and their survival is highly dependent on the water temperature. They cannot live longer in very cold water.

A fry is not as colorful as adults but their color patterns become prominent by 3 weeks old. The first Kois bred by the Japanese were only of two color variety. But years of breeding allowed them to produce more color variants with colored patterns and combinations. Black koi is one of the most common variant but there are other gorgeous colored kois.

Black Koi can grow as long as 4 feet. When breeding this fish you need to keep in mind to build a larger pond for them. Magoi Koi was the first cultivated black koi that can grow thirty six inches in length. It is not actually black in color but instead is bronze. From above the water however it reflects a black color. Magoi are known to maximize the growth of other species through its blood by-products.

One of the old species of black koi is the Karasu or known as crow in Japanese. They are black colored in fins and body but some were bred with some color on their stomach usually white or orange.

Unique species of black koi is the Matsukawabake which comes in intriguing color variations due to water temperature and according to season. The change in its color is also influenced by the food it is fed on. The original black color of the Matsukawabake is retained if no temperature changes occur.

Many love to breed the dragon fish which is a black koi known as Kumonryu. It was first seen in 1980’s and has grown in popularity since then. This fish has a mesmerizing body structure that is similar to a dragon commonly seen from the Japanese paintings. This type of koi is capable of changing its color aside from being black. They are beautifully thought of being a dragon that is ascending through the sky’s white clouds.

The beauty of black koi can be very enchanting with its glamorous patterns of color combination and their abilities to change color according to the current water temperature. Seasonal Koi care is important in order to provide proper breeding of your Koi fish. They also need care that is appropriate to the climate and their environment. For Koi to survive and thrive they need special care according to the four seasons of spring, summer, fall and winter.

Spring is perhaps the worst season for Koi fish. Water temperature is an important factor to consider. Another is to know how to keep bacteria and parasites away to prey on your fish. It is notable that under water temperature of 40 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit, Koi’s immune system is at its lowest.

Proper Koi care will involve supplying adequate oxygen to reduce distress in the fish. Pond heating system is essential in providing ideal water temperature that can be constantly monitored and adjusted.

When Koi are in distress they may not swim well which is a good indication that your fish needs extra Koi care. When they begin to constantly surface on the water they might be hungry and you can feed them, ideally with wheat germ-rich fish food for easy digestion.

Summer is their favorite season of the year where they get an extra boost of energy and immunity. Being the growing season for Kois they often feed 3 to 5 times a day. Ensure that your filter is working well to eliminate their wastes and avoid the buildup of ammonia .

Keep an eye on your dissolved oxygen level. Warm water is unable to hold oxygen well and the fish need dissolved oxygen to live. Proper Koi care should involve providing adequate aeration in the water and this can be addressed by simply using an air pump or large waterfall. Keep your Koi warm and comfortable from the summer heat by providing shades to avoid getting hit by direct sunlight.

Fall is a time of the year when their immune system weakens. It is a critical period when the water temperature is below 60 degrees. It is best to provide Koi care indoor to keep them warm and feed them with foods that are low in protein and high in wheat germ. Do not feed the fish under the temperature below 50 degrees as they will be unable to digest the foods properly and subject them to distress. Keep your pond clean from any debris that will harbor bacterial growth.

Winter is the season where Koi usually hibernate. Being the coldest season of the year it slows down the fish’s digestive system. Do not feed the fish under water temperature of 50 degrees. This will leave the food on the fish stomach undigested and will rot.

Keep adequate oxygen in the pond while keeping more open space for the carbon dioxide to be released from the water. You can use an air stone or aquarium power head for better maintenance of its environment.

Koi ponds are more than just a hole with water. Koi breeders should bear in mind that Koi, like any other pets need to have an environment that is safe and healthy for them to live. Breeders should learn the basic essential tools they need for making the koi pond conducive for living. The secrets to a successful way of keeping koi fish are proper ventilation, water ponds and the fish itself.

Primarily you need to determine the requirements for building the koi pond. Each pond needs planning for the specification of its features. How big should it be? The pond where koi will live must be big because Koi gets large. A standard pond for this kind of fish should hold not less than 1000 gallons of water and must be at least 3-5 feet deep. Your decision on the shape and the size of ponds for the koi will basically depend on your preference.

The pond should be built in an ideal location. You may want to have a pond in an area where you could see the fish as often as you want. You should also consider the accessibility of the pond as you will be spending frequent visits on the area to feed the fish. You can also consider building a small pond indoor or outdoor whatever gives you the convenience.

You should however consider that Koi need to be exposed to sunlight for few hours everyday. The best times will be in the morning and in the afternoon. Koi skin can be burnt by direct sunlight at noon so they must be provided with safety abode. Your outdoor pond should be away from trees to prevent the pond from being damaged by the growing roots as the trees grow. Placing a net above the pond can also provide protection against the falling debris from the trees.

You may find delight of giving your koi both an indoor and outdoor pond but creating one should be properly conceptualized in terms of safety, accessibility and ideal environment.

When building the pond you will be needing pond liners. You can use PVC but a butyl rubber liner is recommended because of its strength. Concrete has the lowest or the cheapest building cost while fiberglass is recommended when you want to have a pond for an indistinct lifetime.

You have to make sure that it would be better to construct a pond with vertical walls for smaller ponds to boost balanced arrangement of water temperature. You should also consider providing protection of your koi from outside predators by creating a higher wall on the pond.

In addition to the mentioned requisites other koi pond equipment that you will need include biological filters, aeration, circulation pump and space wide enough to keep koi from being crowded. These are the things that you have to consider when preparing and designing a pond for koi. The filter will be the one to purify the water. It will be responsible for cleaning the water from waste products, microorganisms and other poisonous substance that can produce water contamination.

The aerator will supply air to the water and will keep the stagnant water continuously moving. The aerator will be providing the fish with oxygen. The pump on the other hand moves the water through the filter and the aerator. These are basic preparation when conceptualizing the ideal koi pond for your favorite fish.

A school of Koi in a pond is such a remarkable and imposing spectacle to behold and a good Koi pond construction will help an enthusiast accomplish breeding of brilliantly colored Koi. You want your Koi pond designed in crystal clear water decorated with ornamental flowers and a well-landscape design to mesmerize friends and visitors alike? The construction of the pond will have some significant factors to be considered in order to perfectly fit with your own design.

Basically, Koi are hardy kind of fish with special requirements to be satisfied. Koi ponds are very complex structures to construct and need special attention to details in their construction. Every Koi enthusiast has their own design of what Koi pond they want. Regardless of ideas, Koi ponds must be properly planned, designed and constructed based on your requirements and specifications. Koi enthusiasts are recommended with following simple guidelines in Koi pond construction.

The first element to consider is pond size and shape. Initially, most new Koi enthusiasts want to have a large pond. Large ponds are beauties to behold but these are difficult and costly to maintain for a newbie in Koi breeding. As a general rule, build only the pond that you can afford.

Try to expand your pond to a larger one once you have already materialized your initial plans and learnt new things about Koi breeding. The shape of your pond will depend on your aesthetic design and preference. You can give any shape to the pond you can define - circular, rectangular, hexagonal, etc…

The pond size and shape will also affect the number of fish to be bread in the pond. An ideal pond must be able to carry 1500 gallons of water which will allow for fish growth. The preferable pond dimension is 9 feet long, 8 feet wide and a minimum depth of 4 feet 6 inches. Koi usually grow big and healthy in larger ponds.

After determining the size and shape of the pond, the location of your Koi pond must be chosen properly. Important considerations should be made in choosing the spot for your pond. Koi needs proper lighting and shading to protect it from direct sunlight and harsh weather conditions. The accessibility and availability of utilities near your pond is important to supply the needed water and electrical requirements. The Koi pond construction must be away from trees with large roots and falling leaves. The pond should also be protected from stray animals which can prey on your Koi.

Filtration is another factor to be considered in building your pond. During the planning stage of constructing your pond, your filtration system should have been determined based on the size of the pond and the number of Koi to be raised. A miscalculated system will result in poor filtration which will then require frequent and labor-intensive cleaning of the filters. This will also result in to more expenses for additional filter equipment. At worst it might result into massive fish kill due to non-elimination of waste products and harmful compounds in the pond.

Koi pond construction is not an easy task to do. But the rewards of a well-constructed Koi pond based on careful planning and implementation are immense.
